Rather than cancelling his NC show, comedian Joel McHale donated the proceeds to an LGBT center in Durham. This comes on the heels of the cancelled Springsteen show, and I have to say, I like McHale's plan better.
Yes, the state still gets money, but the fans don't lose out either. Although boycotts and cancellations can be an important political tool, some argue they amount to empty signaling. And for working fans, a concert is often a luxury. The tickets may be refunded, but hotel room might not, and the time of from work if you live hours away from an arena, can't be recovered either.
