Rich, Sontag, and Feminism

I found this forty-year-old conversation between Susan Sontag and Adrienne Rich pretty fascinating, not just as a historical document, but as an example of the struggle between activism and intellect, theory and practice.

I'm biased. Susna Sontag has inspired me more than any other writer. Even in the 70s, she was a throwback to another era, a "career intellectual" untethered to postmodernism, relativism, or academia. She was a complicated and sometimes contradictory thinker and writer who was unafraid to criticize feminism on an intellectual level, something that even today is anathema.
