Not only may victimization make you famous and the center of small circle of attention, it offers absolution and no accountability and creates entitlements to sympathy, support, and reparations. -- Wendy Kaminer from I'm Dysfunctional, You're DysfunctionalThis was written over twenty years ago, on the then faddish self-help industry. The same thing can be said about today's culture of victimization coalesced on social media. Enrobed in the language of victimhood, its participants are exempt from criticism. The darker reality is that you can never be anything but a victim once identified as such. When the mattress girl get racks up accolades from respected art critics on her "piece," she can only be recognized as an artist in relation to her suffering. It's one small example, but it's an important one, as any criticism of her accusations was immediately shot down.
