A Roundup of Links Involving The Runaways Biopic

I'm actually looking forward to this despite my aversion to anything remotely related to the Twilight empire. I watched the actual Runways documentary, Edgeplay, a few years ago and it piqued my interest in a band I'd mostly left behind with my late 70s, early 80s childhood. It's worth checking out if you can find it. Until then...

The Runways Is a Feminist Film That Rocks (Jezebel)

The film is written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, "a striking woman with a mane of raven-black hair who was clad in a vampire-chic, all-black ensemble." (You may know her as the director of such goth-tastic videos as Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" and Christina Aguilera's "Fighter.") According to Lee, It's not a band movie, per se, but: "an impressionistic character study illuminating a unique female predicament: What happens when teenage girls get handed too much, too soon via worldwide rock stardom?"

"The Runaways" Director Gives Gives Details On The Film's Feminist Message (AfterEllen)

Sigismodni said the film focuses mostly on Joan Jett and Cherie Curie, played, of course, by Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning to illustrate, "How different they are, how they were drawn together for this crazy experience. Joan is so focused, she really wanted to have this band. And Cherie wanted the rage of rock 'n' roll, the rebellion."

Moody And Mulleted, Kristen Stewart Teases The Runaways (Idolator)

We really don’t think we can handle Dakota Fanning already old enough to wear sexy clothing and convincingly thrash around onstage in a rock band. (The original Churrie joined The Runaways at age 16; Fanning’s 15.). Then again, she was upstaging Sean Penn at age 7 and getting sexually assaulted on camera at age 13, so she’s never really played the part of an adorable innocent tyke.
