British female rappers have always been a breed apart. While their male counterparts have tended to wear their debt to US hip-hop greats with pride, the likes of Ms Dynamite and Stush have shied away from the sexually explicit shock tactics employed by Americans such as Lil' Kim and Trina. Stush, the chipmunk-voiced chatterbox who first came to prominence in 2002 with the grime classic Dollar Sign, laughs at the thought of copying the Americans. "Over here, if you came out with that talk, you'd just get people going, 'Oh, that girl's a slag, man!' All the guys would switch on you, you'd get no respect."
When Breaking Up Is The Best (Bitch Blogs)
Setting aside those songs of the sad sappy variety (that nevertheless, even at their most cliché, are exactly what you need when you're down), and those songs that are ambiguously-break-uppy that you project your own feelings on and make your own, I'm talking about those songs that are less about being blue than about celebrating being done with something bad.
Kathleen Hanna On Music, John Mayer & blogs (Jezebel)
Kathleen Hanna, feminist role model, former Bikini Kill frontwoman and current member of Le Tigre, went on GRITtv to talk about the future of feminism, riot grrrl and, because this is now a requirement for every public figure, John Mayer.
About Me & Kurt (what you didn't know) (Oh No They Didn't!)
MaryLou Lord (90's singer song writer of Killrockstars fame) sets the record straight about her fabled friendship with Kurt Cobain. I have loved MaryLou since I was 15 and would see her playing in the Boston Park Street Station. My 1st kiss with my high school love was at a concert of her and Elliott Smith at the Middle East in summer of '97. There were long-ago rumors of a a brief friendship between her and a young Kurt..one that infamously brought the wrath of Courtney..
