Album of the Week: American Gong by Quasi

You know what? I don't listen to rock anymore. I mean, not the kind of "rock" that makes Rolling Stone lists (yes, I'm not leaving that one alone), but actual, bona fide, bang your head against the wall (or hard surface of your choice) rock. Quasi is the brainchild of former Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss, her ex-husband Sam Coomes (who shares vocals), and bassist, Joanna Bolme.

And American Gong does indeed rock, Actually, it kinds of stombs and kicks. But that's a good thing. From The A.V. Club:

Their stomping rhythmic interplay is, if anything, even more front and center here, where it anchors Sam Coomes’ spiraling guitar heroics before letting the whole thing gel into fuzzed-out Malkmus-ian jams on “Bye Bye Blackbird” or blown-out, lazy afternoon noodling on “Little White Horse.” The standout track, “Repulsion,” is a caffeine pill taken on an empty stomach ...
