Lack of funds and lack of an intrepid spirit keep me from being a true road-tripper; however, I do love making road mixes because you never know when you might just have to hit the open road. I've noticed several songs making repeat appearances. Here are a few of my favs..
1. Tift Merritt - "Late Night Pilgrim"
The entire album, Tambourine, is the perfect road trip soundtrack by itself, but I always go back to this song.
2. Rachel Sweet - "B-A-B-Y"
Okay, my mixes are usually heavily reliant on the alt.country (a term I loathe), but I love me some girly new wave, especially for driving around the city at night.
3. Heartless Bastards - "Grey"
I couldn't find a clip for my first choice, "Onions," but "Grey" is a good choice, too. If everything here seems a bit mid-00s, it might because the last trip I took was five years ago. Sad, I know.
4. Lucinda Williams - "I Just Wanted To See You So Bad"
I have another list brewing of five songs that would sound kind of creepy if sung by a man instead of a woman (not fair, I know), and unfortunately, this is one of them, but it also doubles as a fantastic car song if you ignore the stalker-esque lyrics.
5. Bettye LaVette - "Joy"
A funky cover of a Lucinda Williams song, appropriately enough. Also perfect for late night driving.
