Hi, and welcome to the rock I've been living under for the past two decades. Only recently did I realize Hole's version was a cover. I know, crazy right? Listening to Colossal Youth now you can hear how much of the Young Marble Giants sound was borrowed throughout the "grunge" 90s, and back then I hated that sound. It was all so dark and plodding; no humor at all. Oh yeah, maybe there was the requisite ironic cover every now and then, but aside from that, the early 90s was a dirgelike parade of gloom.
Of course, all this has nothing to do with the original song. Unlike Courtney Love's howl, singer Alison Statton has a sweet, but sort of distanced quality to her voice. I'm rediscovering both bands as I write this, and fighting the urge to pick one version over the other. (And yeah, other bands have covered "Credit In The Straight World" as well.) Let's go with the original. Today.
