Dan Savage says "We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people..." People are predictably outraged

I hate the narrative that's forming around Dan Savage's statement that "we can ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people" given during a speech at the National High School Journalist Conference in Seattle. Several students walked out, prompting media outlets to ask, "did he go to far?" (Some even laughably calling him a "bully.")
"We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people," he said on April 13. "The same way, the same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation. We ignore bullshit in the Bible about all sorts of things. The Bible is a radically pro-slavery document. Slave owners waved Bibles over their heads during the Civil War and justified it." (via The Advocate )
The question I wish were asked is "why pander to those who insist on taking the Bible literally, even to the point of denigrating someone else's choices that have absolutely no bearing on their own lives whatsoever?"

Savage apologized for calling the walk-out a "pansy-assed move, " but not for pointing out the hypocrisy. Good for him.
