None of the bloggers I follow seem to have been keeping up with their music diaries. I'll be the first to admit it's pretty tedious and chore-like after the first week, but I thought I'd post a "wrap up" of sorts:
Ten most played albums for May:
1. The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site
2. Rufus Wainwright - Out of the Game
3. Nina Simone - Little Girl Blue
4. Ryan Adams - Rock 'n' Roll
5. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
6. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
7. Johnny Thunders - So Alone
8. The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
9. Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
10. The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
There it is. I have pretty standard taste for an aging rock fan, I think. May's playlist is representative of what I listen to as background music for writing, or working out -- what I listen to when no one's looking.
I write a lot about pop music, it's social relevance or whatever, but it's rarely what I listen to at home. And I don't know if I'm supposed to feel a certain degree of guilt because of it. Growing up in an era where the schism between pop and not pop was definitely wider than it is today colored my perception of what "good" music is. I can intellectualize it, but at the end of the day, this is what's in my ear.
