My views on this subject have changed over time, but as many of my gay and lesbian friends, colleagues and staff embrace long term committed relationships, I find myself unable to look them in the eye without honestly confronting this uncomfortable inequality. Supporting marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples is simply the right thing to do for our country, a country founded on the principals of liberty and equality.A democratic senator coming out in support of marriage equality is hardly unexpected, but given that Missouri lags behind other states -- even other red states -- in LGBT rights. In 2004, 71 percent voted to amend the state's constitution to define marriage as the union between one man and one woman , but things are changing. As recent polling suggests, the majority of Missourians support either marriage equality of civil unions, so this is definitely a step in the right direction.
