Camp NaNoWriMo: Update Four

As I write this, I have about 2500 words to go to make my 50,000 word total. I don't hate my story, but I don't love it either. I actually looking forward to editing it. Right now, there's one part that on its own would make a nice standalone short story, and I'm itching to edit it, but I am going to work on the thing as a larger piece of fiction throughout the coming months.

Random observations from the world of frenetic NaNo writing:

  • My characters are pretty boring. This is to be expected with a first draft, but they seemed so vivid in my head that yeah, it's a little disappointing.
  • I was sort of aiming for a sprawling, multiple POV kind of thing, like a lot of my favorite novels. Something I feel I should be ashamed for reading, and I don't know why.
  • Don't try for "pretty" writing, at least not for a first draft. Passages that are too lyrical have been my downfall in the past, so this time I strived for Carver-esque clarity instead. I have a lot of he said, she said, he did this, she did that nonsense, but I'm not sweating it. At least not now while there are greater issues to tackle.
  • I have something approaching theme and motif, but no real plot. Actually, that's not true. What I don't have is a lot of action, and that's okay, but the writing has to be excellent to pull that off, and mine isn't yet.
  • I do have pie. And alcohol. And lots of cigarettes. Did I mention pie?
