"I Just Can't Relate"

"I can't relate" as a criticism is the bane of my literary existence. I understand "I can't relate" to mean "I can't find anything about this piece of writing that mirrors my own life," though it seems to be interchangeable with likability.  My knee jerk response is to ask "What have you been reading?" because very little of what I read relates to me on a deeply personal level, but that doesn't mean it should be dismissed outright.

Or maybe I'm the bad reader. I'm starting to think I'm an atypical one, at least. Do you have to find characters relatable to be enjoyable?
