Lana Del Rey isn't interested in feminism -- and I don't really care.

A few years ago, I write a post on how famous women refuse to identify as feminist, even when their behavior says otherwise. It was linked at a few places, notably Jezebel, which, I guess, is nice, though if I'm being completely honest, I've never subscribed to the idea that it's necessary for all women to call themselves feminists.

Lana Del Rey is the latest in a string of young female artists to reject the feminist label. I think sites like Jezebel make too big a deal of this; frankly, it's sadder that she, and others like her, seem to not have the foggiest idea what feminism is. If a famous woman came forth with a valid criticism, like feminism's history of exclusionary politics, that would be great. I'd love to see that happen, but unfortunately a nuanced knowledge of feminism is like a death knell for a pop star's career.

I don't expect a twenty-something pop singer to know anymore about feminist theory than I'd expect her to know about string theory or french philosophy. Most of the worst "offenders" are young people with little formal education and whose every move has been calculated by a production team.
