Should fiction contain references to pop culture?

Electric Literature explores this.

Personally, I like bits of pop culture flotsam scattered through fiction. Perhaps it's generational, being raised on a diet of Brett Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney. I don't think novels that reference the current are any less timeless; and the sense of being rooted in something, be it Cornflakes or iPhones, is a strength, not a weakness.
