Pink

It's more than two-years old, but digging around on the internet for something else, I found this great discussion from Shakesville on policing femininity... but I have a few reservations.

While I certainly don't doubt the existence of internalized misogyny, it makes me uncomfortable to see it trotted out as the primary reason for rejecting anything marked feminine. (Not to mention that it's been used by radfems to delegitimatize trans* men and genderqueer people.) That's not what Liss is implying here, but it's such a simple explanation, I can see why it's popular among contemporary feminists. There's a difference between "I don't like" and "no one should like" that gets a little lost, though. Another thing I never see mentioned in the feminist blog world is that certain expressions of femininity are classed. Growing up a working-class kid, a lot things marked as feminine were also marked as "rich" to me. Even if I wanted it, I didn't have access to it. Class privilege is big part of things marked feminine and the safety required to perform them.
