Dream Journal

I keep a dream journal.

I'm not a hippie, despise anything that smacks of "soul work" or anything new age-y, but if i have a dream that's anything more than a handful of fleeting images, I jot the details down in a document, and later edit it as if I'm writing a "real story." Why? It's good writing practice.

Other people's dreams are boring, so I'll spare the details, but trying to form a cohesive narrative from dreams, I've found, is a really fun exercise. And there's a lot about writing that isn't fun. Writing is damn fucking hard. (A fact writers conveniently leave out when talking about their "craft.") Having something of a preformed story to play with, no matter how ridiculous, a relief.
