Album of the Week: Charlotte Gainsbourg's IRM

(I'm listening to IRM right now as I am writing this, so pardon me if this is a little disjointed.)

Beck-produced IRM  is Charlotte Gainsbourg's first album since 2007's 5:55 and her first since suffering a head injury after a water skiing accident that same year. (The title IRM is derived from MRI -- more on that later.) From Amazon's product description:

"What started as a brief recording session between Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beck ended up to be the body of work that is IRM. Over the course of a year and a half of writing and recording together, Beck's role grew to encompass all aspects of the creative process. He worked seamlessly with Charlotte co writing the lyrics and produced and mixed the recording. (This is the first time he has ever been so involved in another artist's work.)"

The title track, which was posted as a free download on her website as early as last October, is trippy and weird but utterly mesmerizing. (The cacophony of clicks and whirls are the sounds an actual MRI scan makes.) Beck's touch is evident, but not as obvious as I thought it would be. Although it does lend a certain "heaviness" to some of the tracks.
