Five: Really great pop songs (that aren't really "pop" but whatever)

1. "Not Too Soon" - Throwing Muses
The Real Ramona was a huge part of the soundtrack to my misspent youth. I know there are probably more "serious" songs on that record, "Not Too Soon" is perfect for dancing around in your bedroom with a hairbrush. (Oh yeah, alterna-kids danced too.)

2. "Monday Monday Monday" - Tegan and Sara
If The Real Ramona was the soundtrack to my youth, If It Was You was the soundtrack to my early thirties.

3. "Lights Out" - Santigold
Something about this song feels so familiar, but so new at the same time. It's got a new-wave, 80s vibe without being self-consciously retro.

4. "I Want Candy" - Thee Headcoatees
I'm really taking liberties here, with the whole "pop" genre, but since this was a big huge pop hit in the 60s, and again for Bow Wow Wow, I'll take it. Thee Headcoatees put a garage rock spin on it.

5. "One More Hour" - Sleater-Kinney
One of the best unrequited love songs ever.
