Rewind: Catherine Irwin - Cut Yourself a Switch

Released almost a decade ago, Cut Yourself a Switch is the only solo album from Freakwater's frontwoman, Catherine Irwin. Long thought of as one of the unsung heroes of the insurgent country movement of the 90s, Freakwater played country music in the most traditional sense of the word. (The country music playing on the radio starting from the early 90s or thereabouts is basically pop music with a soupcon of twang. It's not country music.) Cut Yourself a Switch follows the same path, but is even more stripped down. Yet for all its traditionalism, it still sounds fresh and modern.
