Rewind: Hedwig and the Angry Inch S/T

Normally I wouldn't bother featuring a soundtrack, but this one stands on its own as fun piece of late 20th-century nostalgia that's equally campy and guileless .

The original cast recording is light years ahead of the movie soundtrack in terms of heart (I think some people don't realize Hedwig had a life before becoming a movie), and as a stage production, and is probably still playing somewhere:
The character of Hedwig was originally inspired by a German divorced U.S. Army wife who was a (creator John Cameron) Mitchell family babysitter and moonlighted as a prostitute at her Junction City, Kansas trailer park home. The music is steeped in the androgynous 1970s glam rock era of David Bowie (who co-produced the Los Angeles production of the show), as well as the work of John Lennon and early punk godfathers Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. "Wig in a Box," and "Midnight Radio" are two of the standout picks, though the entire album is great, and I'm generally not a fan of rock musicals. The former is the set's "Don't Dream It, Be It" moment; full of the redemptive power of rock 'n; roll, and the ability to recreate oneself. Both borrow heavily from the best of 70s/80s glam and its predilection for androgyny: The New York Dolls, Marc Bolan, and especially transgender performer, Jayne County.

  1. I saw a production of Hedwig in a rock club in Morgantown, West Virginia, and loved it. It rocked and it was both funny and moving.
