Here Comes the Sun is vastly under-appreciated in Nina Simome's vast catalog. Released in 1971, the eight songs, all covers of rock and pop songs of the era like "Mr. Bojangles" "Angel of the Morning," and the title track, "Here Comes the Sun," were given different arrangements and a full orchestra.
This is one of my favorite Nina Simone albums. I'm a sucker for covers, especially those that really transform the song and make it into something unique without destroying the essence of the original. The most recent, and one of the most well-known, examples of that is Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt," but it's a rare performer who has the ability to make a song "their own."
One of the standout tracks, for me, is Simone's jazzed-up version of "Suzanne."
