Shelving:Persistence : All Ways Butch and Femme

It's nice to find anthologies written by queer writers that address gender and sexuality without being overtly pedantic. Persistence is a good introduction to gender theory by way of personal anecdote.

Like any collection, the essays are hit or miss, and some even show lesbian communities as reductive and alive with gender essentialism as straight ones. Even more problematic is the thinly veiled transphobia in one of the pieces. (More on that here .)

Overall, I think this is a valuable anthology, especially for someone just learning about gender expression, gender identity, and sexuality -- with the aforementioned caveats.
