This from Cindy Hotpoint's (The Rich Girls Are Weeping ) post about about Liz Phair really this stood out:
I guess what’s so shocking is the way that the cynicism and self-loathing of Phair’s lyrics really wormed their way into whatever part of of me that defines self-worth.
After reading that, I started mentally cataloging all the records that may have had more than a passing influence on the way I look at life: the whole 70s/80s punk and DIY "fuck the man" attitude that was so much a part of my life in my twenties, and even into my early thirties -- yeah, pretty much inspired by a simple set of Rhino comps. (Lacking cool older siblings to guide me, those comps meant a lot.) And this blog wouldn't exist had it not been for bands like Sleater-Kinney, Hole, and Bikini Kill in the 90s. Now I find myself growing up and growing away from the whole indie = good, everything else = bad mentality. Although it definitely shaped my thinking for the better, and served me well through my formative years, I don't need it now.
What record could you honestly say shaped the way you live your life, for better or for worse?
